And so Im going to tell you a story about one of my most favorite songwriters, Kris Kristofferson. He is a great songwriter because he can phrase words such as Lay your head upon my pillow, Hold your warm and tender body close to mine, Hear the whisper of the raindrops, Blow softly against my window, Make believe you love me one more time. Those eloquent words are from his song "For the Good Times."
Back when Kris was struggling as a songwriter while working as a janitor at Sun Records he was always trying to get anyone to record his songs. When Johnny Cash was at Sun doing recordings, the management told Kris not to bother Johnny. From time to time Kris would slip one of his songs to one of Johns associates to give to Johnny and see if he was interested in recording it. Kris would never get much of a response and the typical reply was that Johnny hadnt gotten to it yet.
Eventually, along Kriss life journey he got a job as a helicopter pilot as he had some of that experience in the military. During that time, even though he was frustrated, he was determined to get one of his songs to Johnny. So lo and behold, what does he do? He takes a helicopter and flies over to Johnnys house and lands right on the back yard lawn. Obviously people came out of the house and asked, whats going on here? And Kris said to Johnny, Im a songwriter and Ive been trying to get one of my songs that Ive written to you to see if there was any interest in it. Up to now I havent had much success.
Well without getting into a long story Johnny did record the song which was "Sunday Morin Comin Down" and it did become a big hit.
This of course leads to my wondering about the workings of FATE and questioning whether maybe some of our lifes events are already planned out for us. Look how long Kris had to wait before it finally clicked for him and then it happened in that very unusual way. Who knows, but in this case one cant help but wonder since It wasnt his time until it was his time.
In any event Im glad that FATE was there so that all of us can enjoy the words of one of the best songwriters there is today, Kris Kristofferson. His hits like "For the Good Times, Me and Bobby McGee, Help Me Make it Through The Night, and Why Me" along with so many others will live on for many years to come.
